A garage door should not suddenly feel much heavier
A garage door’s counterbalance system, including its springs, helps offset much of the door’s weight during normal operation.
If a door that previously moved normally suddenly feels much heavier or becomes unusually difficult to move, do not keep lifting or lowering it to confirm the problem.

An abnormal change in how heavy the door feels is enough reason to stop further testing and arrange professional inspection.
Why a garage door can feel heavy
The counterbalance system helps offset much of the door’s weight so the door can move normally.
If that system is no longer providing normal support, the door may feel substantially heavier than before.
A broken or weakened spring is one possible reason. Problems involving the lifting cables can also appear with abnormal door balance or movement.

If a cable looks loose or damaged

- manually raising or lowering the door again;
- lifting the door halfway and releasing it;
- repeatedly cycling the opener;
- forcing the door open or closed;
- increasing opener force;
- using a stronger opener as a workaround;
- asking another person to help overcome the door’s weight;
- adjusting, winding, unwinding, removing, or replacing springs;
- pulling, tightening, reseating, or replacing cables;
- loosening or removing bottom brackets;
- reseating rollers;
- bending, loosening, or realigning tracks.
Do not try to overcome an unusually heavy garage door by force, by repeated opener operation, or by having another person help lift it.
The goal is not to prove how heavy the door has become. The abnormal change itself is useful diagnostic information.
