Garage Door Safety Reversal Test: What Homeowners Should Check

Learn how to check garage-door opener entrapment-protection functions safely, what each check can show, and when to stop using automatic closing.

Start with the door, not the test

A safety-system check is routine maintenance only when the garage door is already suitable for normal operation.

Do not perform a reversal test to investigate a door that is crooked, off track, unusually heavy, binding, unstable, moving unpredictably, or known to have a damaged spring, lifting cable, track, roller, hinge, or other critical hardware.

Identify the exact opener and prescribed test

Use the procedure prescribed for that exact opener. Do not combine steps, object sizes, positions, timing, or adjustment instructions from different manufacturers into a universal test.

Different safety functions need different checks

Do not treat every entrapment-protection feature as one generic “auto-reverse” system.

A typical opener may include more than one protection function, including:

  • a photoelectric or safety-sensor system intended to detect an obstruction in the closing path;
  • contact-reversal protection intended to reverse the door after specified contact during a prescribed test;
  • other model-specific monitoring, warning, or entrapment-protection features.

The exact opener manual determines which functions are present and how each is checked.

Passing one check does not prove every safety function is operating correctly.

Photoelectric-sensor checks are not contact-reversal tests

Photoelectric sensors monitor the closing path on systems that use them. Manufacturer instructions may prescribe checking that the closing door responds correctly when the sensor beam is interrupted.

Follow only the exact manufacturer’s test method. Never use a person, hand, foot, pet, or other body part to interrupt the beam or enter the path of a moving door.

Do not bypass, cover, relocate, disconnect, or defeat the sensors to make the opener close.

If the opener does not respond as its prescribed sensor check requires, stop relying on normal automatic closing until the issue is resolved according to the manufacturer or by qualified service.

A failed check identifies a safety-function problem. It does not by itself prove that a sensor, wire, logic board, alignment setting, or other specific component has failed.

Contact reversal requires a failure-safe procedure

Some opener manufacturers prescribe a contact-reversal test using a specified inanimate test object placed at a specified location on the floor beneath a normally operating door.

Only perform such a test when it is explicitly prescribed for the exact opener and you can set up the test while the door is stationary, then remain completely clear of the door path during operation.

Never substitute a person or body part for the prescribed object. Never hold, catch, support, or reach under the moving door.

The test must remain safe even if the opener fails to reverse. That means the prescribed object—not a person—takes the contact, while the observer stays outside the movement and entrapment area.

If the opener does not reverse as the manufacturer specifies, stop relying on automatic closing. Do not compensate by increasing force or repeatedly cycling the door. Follow the manufacturer’s failure guidance or arrange qualified service.

Do not adjust force to make a failed test pass

A failed safety check is not permission to increase opener force, defeat a sensor, alter a safety feature, or keep repeating the test until the result changes.

Some manuals may include model-specific adjustment or service procedures. Do not assume those procedures apply to another opener.

What a passed test actually means

If a prescribed safety check fails:

  1. Stop relying on normal automatic closing.
  2. Keep people and pets away from the door’s movement path.
  3. Do not bypass the failed protection function.
  4. Do not increase opener force to obtain a different result.
