A door that will not stay open is a stop-use symptom
If your garage door has already reached an open or elevated position and then drifted or moved downward instead of remaining there, that observation is enough to stop further testing.
Do not operate the door again to see whether the behavior repeats.
Do not disconnect the opener and lift the door manually to test its balance. Do not leave the door partly open and release it to see what happens.
An elevated garage door can be very heavy. If the counterbalance system or another mechanical part is not supporting the door normally, the door may move in an unexpected or uncontrolled way.

What the observation can tell you
Garage door springs and related counterbalance components help offset the weight of the door during normal movement.
A properly functioning door system should not unexpectedly move downward from an open or elevated position.

Do not attempt to catch or support the door, even if you are concerned that it may close on a vehicle or other object.

If the door only drifted downward slowly
A slow drift is still abnormal information worth reporting.

If a cable looks loose or damaged
A cable may already appear slack, displaced, frayed, or broken from a safe position.

If the door is crooked or uneven

If the door is off track

Do not attempt to diagnose or correct a door that will not stay open by:

- manually raising or lowering the door;
